Dhawan was left out of the ODI team for the Sri Lanka series

The BCCI announced the two white-ball squads for the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday (December 27), and Shikhar Dhawan was informed that he has been left out of the ODI squad. This year, Dhawan has struggled with inconsistent play in the ODI format. Since making a comeback in 2013, his 2022 average of 34.40 and strike rate of 74.21 represent the lowest figures he has ever recorded.

A crucial element was also the recent performances of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. In 2022, Gill averaged over 70 and had a 102.57 strike rate, but Kishan recently became just the fourth Indian batsman to get two hundreds in one-day international cricket. Given that he turned 37 earlier this month, the decision to dismiss the veteran has now cast question on his ability to play international cricket.

Rishabh Pant was also left off of both squads by the selectors. The wicketkeeper-batter was absent from Bangladesh's ODI matches as well. After being selected as the skipper for the series in New Zealand right after the T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya will once again represent India in the shortest format. Despite KL Rahul's inclusion in the squad, the all-rounder makes a comeback for the ODI team and has also been promoted to vice-captain in the format. Suryakumar Yadav, a middle-order batter, will serve as Hardik's backup in the T20I setup.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rahul won't play in the T20Is but will all be available for the ODIs. The roster for the three-match T20I series also includes pacers Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar, who have not yet received a cap. The uncapped pair has replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Siraj, who were on the team in New Zealand. Kuldeep Yadav was selected for the ODIs but was dropped from the T20I squad.

Shreyas Iyer and Pant are replaced on the T20I team by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahul Tripathi. Gill, who was passed over for the Bangladesh series, has been reintroduced to the 50-over setup now that Dhawan has been dropped. Ravindra Jadeja, an all-around player, is not included in either squad as he continues to recuperate. On January 3, the series premieres in Mumbai. The ODI matches are scheduled for January 10, 12, and 15.
